Do you sometimes find that you are stuck in a morning traffic jam caused by a building site that has been running for months? Or have you waited to move into a new apartment that remains little more than bare brickwork on the day of official completion? Whether justified or not, you will probably put the blame on the construction firm and thus indirectly on its managers and employees. This book is dedicated to providing knowledge on efficient site management to such practising and future construction managers. The author wants to link the management of organizations and construction and, mainly, 'fill this important gap by applying general principles of management specifically to the construction industry' (p. ⅷ). To do so, he covers a broad spectrum of topics ranging from 'evolution of management theories, environmental forces, strategy, organization structure, work groups, organizational culture, leadership, motivation and personnel management' (p. ⅷ). The ambition of the book is high as Naoum seeks to offer not only specific know-how on construction management but also an academic discussion about management and organization theories. This review is intended to help the potential reader to decide whether Naoum has achieved his self-imposed goals, and will provide additional literature sources on selected topics addressed in the book.
