Professor Robert Gibbons of MIT and Professor John Roberts from Stanford University compiled 28 essays from leading scholars within organizational economics in The Handbook of Organizational Economics (henceforth, the Handbook) in order to make recent advances in the field more accessible to economists (p. 7). Arrow's classic definition of organizations sets the context for the Handbook: 'organizations are a means of achieving the benefits of collective action in situations where the price system fails' (Arrow, 1974, p. 26). Under this definition, any forms of coordination other than markets are a research topic for organizational economics. This means that the research scope should extend beyond traditional business firms to include diverse organizational forms such as consortia, unions, legislatures, agencies and schools. The theoretical foundations (Part I) and research methods (Part II) introduced in the Handbook have wide applicability to organizational issues that would occur within firms (Parts HI and TV), between firms (Part V) and beyond firms (Part VI). In light of the laudatory comments from Nobel Prize worthy scholars such as Professors Bengt Holmstrom and Jean Tirole (see the Institute of Scientific Index's prediction for future Nobel Prize Winners in Economic Sciences), the Handbook undoubtedly represents the highest standard of organizational economics. For this reason, instead of assessing the Handbook's quality, this review focuses on reinforcing the relevance of the theories and empirics contained in the Handbook for construction organizational research.
