This book is a unique and valuable contribution to a critical aspect of modern urban life, the transport interchange. It goes beyond an architectural critic's review of transport interchanges, although it is comprehensive in the case studies examined, to present design principles viewed through the lens of sustainability. Edwards is emphatic that the transport interchange is denned as a transport facility that allows travellers to transfer from one mode to another (such as from rail to air, rail to bus, etc.), as distinct from a conventional single mode station facility with no capacity to interchange with other transport services. This definition of the transport interchange considerably narrows the spectrum of transport facilities that qualify and indeed, the genuine multi-modal transport interchange is not commonplace.
