摘要

Terio and Kahkonen apply action research to examine environmental management systems for small firms in construction. They seek to develop systems and methods of working that reduce their impact on the environment. Contractors' supervisors have excellent knowledge of environmental issues but this is often fragmented and partly tacit. If contractors are to fulfil their obligations under increasingly stringent regulation, then a more systematic approach is required. Such an approach has been developed with 15 small to medium-sized construction companies in Finland. The proposed solution involves guidelines, practical measures for communication to site operatives, a process model and a technique for calculating an environmental index for a site. The authors show how this system can be implemented with tangible results for small to medium-sized firms.
