The city of Bristol has done well in the looks department. Its long history as the commercial and cosmopolitan capital of the West Country has left it with a varied building stock that over time has muddled and merged with its topography, helping to develop a vibrant city that regularly tops 'Best Places to Live' lists. Looking at its backdrop of Georgian facades, prettily painted houses, converted waterfront warehouses and seats of learning, it soon becomes apparent that this is an extraordinarily low-rise city. Save for the odd brutalist concrete remnant from blunt-pencilled 1960s architects on the outskirts of the city centre, in terms of residential properties Bristolians do most of their living within six storeys of the ground. But with low rise developments requiring a larger footprint to provide the occupation density demanded by the housing crisis, and a young workforce pushing the trend for city centre living, Bristol is starting to look up.
