The dark red, brick-built silk mill perched on the western bank of the River Derwent in Derby city centre does not immediately leap out as a building that changed the course of history. But its unprepossessing exterior hides a history of industrial 'firsts'. The mill sits proudly among the more famous buildings in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Derwent Valley Mills. It is thought to have been the first fully mechanised factory in the world, and is also the scene of one of the earliest documented cases of industrial espionage.
