Four pilot projects have found that flexible-working practices for tradespeople can work, after successful trials at Skanska's HS2 site, as well as on Bam and Willmott Dixon jobs. The projects tested a range of flexible-working options for site staff, encompassing manual and white-collar workers, such as engineers and project managers. Consultancy Timewise, which managed the pilots, found workers reported better wellbeing. The study, which took place between June 2020 and February 2021, also found that the changes to working practices had no negative impact on project budgets or timeframes. Timewise director Emma Stewart said the study should drive a change in working practices: "Our trailblazing pioneers, Bam Construct, Bam Nuttall, Skanska UK and Willmott Dixon, have shown that wellbeing and balance should be possible to achieve forthe whole workforce - not just those in office roles, and in doing so have provided a blueprint that we hope will drive wider industry change."
