This special issue of 27st Century Society arises from a transdisciplinary conference on the social future held at Cardiff University in September 2006. The complexity of the subject-matter was organised into three streams, focused, respectively, on how the future is known, created and minded. The event attracted participants from every continent, 51 countries, and a wide range of disciplines from within the social sciences and the arts as well as a diversity of practitioners from business and social policy. With the exception of Nicholas Tresilian's paper, 'After capitalism?', contributions to this issue are drawn primarily from the 'Futures Created' stream of the conference. Collectively, they offer a small window on this event in that they present a range of approaches: academic papers are fronted by one of the four artworks specially created for the conference and interleaved with poems from Gillian Clarke, National Poet of Wales for 2008. Empirical research is set alongside historical and literary analyses and senior academics are teamed up with researchers at the very beginning of their careers. Thus, for example, Professor Ronnie Frankenberg looks back over a scholarly career extending over more than 50 years, while Catherine Butler, Elisabeth Schilling and Laura Watts, who report on futures aspects associated with their respective PhD investigations, look to the future for their academic careers.
