Morgan ashurst is set to start work on the ￡26m redevelopment of the National Construction College East after the flagship training facility got final planing permission. The Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk accepted the application for the site in Bircham Newton on 14 January. Main contractor Morgan Ashurst is expected to start work in the summer. The scheme is set for completion in February 2011. The college will get new learner facilities, including accommodation blocks with en-suite bedrooms, a new restaurant and training support services, and sports centre, plus addi- tional amenities including a shop to be shared with the public. Andy Walder, director of the National Construction College (NCC) said: "We are very pleased to meet this target and we are now one step closer to starting on site." The decision marks an end to protracted wranglings over the scheme, which the NCC originally hoped to part-fund with cash raised from a housing development. Earlier this year, the Planning Inspectorate quashed the NCC's hopes of also building 24 homes on the site and of revamping its ageing swimming pool, forcing it to scale-down its plans.
