Training is an essential part of any strategy for improving health and safety. Frazer Clement, CITB-ConstructionSkills' business services director, examines the qualifications available, and looks at how they have worked in practice. Maintaining a culture of safety within our industry is essential. With around 9,500 reported injury accidents, 4,100 major injuries and 70 deaths occurring each year, the industry must do all it can to encourage and maintain safe working practices. The effects of accidents at work come with other costs too: it is estimated that accidents and illness cost the industry £3bn each year. Health and safety affects everyone in the construction industry - which is why CITB-ConstructionSkills continues to place health and safety at the forefront of its agenda and the issue is central to the drive to qualify the workforce by 2010.
