Based on a number of reports (as well as conference sessions I've been to lately), the climate for mergers & acquisitions in the packaging and converting field is heating up again. While down significantly from the heights of 1999, there were 311 M&A transactions worldwide in the packaging industry last year, with the value of announced deals totaling $14.3 billion. Both the number of transactions and deal value were up slightly from 2002. And this year, M&A activity should be even stronger as a result of an improving environment for making deals, say the firms involved in helping seal especially middle-market transactions of $5 million to $150 million.
