摘要

Coverage of all things disney has featured heavily in asia over the summer in the lead-up to the opening of its new theme park in Hong Kong. The park, which opened on 12 September, took 5 years to build and is expected to provide a major boost to Hong Kong's economy, creating tens of thousands of much-needed jobs and generating an estimated US$19 billion in revenue over the next 40 years. The company has however been forced to deal with sustained criticism from environmentalists, labour activists and the local press. The issues included Disneyland's initial plans to sell shark fin soup at the park's restaurants, an idea that was later shelved following outrage from conservationists. Nearby residents complained about nightly firework shows, which they claim will add to pollution. The company also became a target for dog-lovers when it started rounding up and destroying stray mongrels left behind at the site by construction workers.
