Intensity Enhancements of 200-2000 MeV Protons in 1997-2005 as Measured by the KET/ULYSSES

Observations of solar protons with energy 40-80 MeV at various points of the three-dimensional heliosphere in 1997-2003 onboard the ULYSSES spacecraft were discussed in [1-3]. According to the interpretation suggested in [1 ], the source of solar cosmic rays (SCR) has the dimensions of more than 120° both in solar latitude and longitude, and the duration of its activity reaches several hours. If a magnetic field line connects the observer with the source, during the growth phase (the first 30-50 hours), the observable intensity corresponds to some local source, while there are large-scale SCR gradients in the interplanetary space. During the decay phase, when spatial gradients are small or absent ("the reservoir effect" [4]), the intensity is determined by the total number of protons injected into the heliosphere and by the rate of their escape from the tank [1]. In [2], proton intensity enhancements were observed near the ecliptic, recorded by the ULYSSES spacecraft when there was no magnetic connection with the source, and particles propagated up to a favorable field line only due to transverse diffusion in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). In this case, enhancements of intensity above the background were minimal or absent, and no "the reservoir effect" was observed. On the contrary, in all events considered in [3], 40-80 MeV protons were injected into the polar regions symmetrically about the equator with a small constant intensity, and no longitude dependence was found in this case.
