Results of Measurements of the Spectral Index of GCR Protons in the Energy Range 1-40 TeV

Figures summarize the measurement results shown in Tables 2-5. Figure 1 shows their distribution over the value of β_p (line segment along the abscissa axis corresponds to the energy range, within which lies about 90% of statistics of a given experiment). Figure 2 shows a histogram of this distribution. The averaged value of β_p from all experiments is < β_p > = 3.1 ± 0.05. We believe that the main cause of existing uncertainty in the discussion about the value of β_p in the proton spectrum in the range E > 1 TeV is not deficiency in the number of experiments, but the existence of two values β_p = 2.8 obtained in papers by JACEE and RUNJOB collaborations. It is unlikely that new measurements can solve existing uncertainty until the methodological causes of their large deviation from the bulk of results with β_p ≥ 3.0 are clarified.
