Many of the challenges that we once faced of treatingnAlzheimer’s disease are now understood because of thenworldwide research efforts into this deadly disease. We nownunderstand certain aspects of the pathology, genetics andnneurotransmitter deficits of AD. This has resulted in twonclasses of drugs to partially remedy the underlying neurotransmitternabnormalities and more recently has launched annextensive clinical effort targeting beta amyloid peptide. Wenstill, however, require broader therapeutic approaches tonultimately prevent and modify disease progression in AD,nand we need concomitant advances in diagnostics to parallelnthis process in order to ultimately control the devastation thatnthis disease extols on society.nThe classic clinical features of Alzheimer’s disease includenits insidious onset, slow progression, memory loss andnloss of cognitive skills. The cognitive skills lost include language,nvisuospatial relations, planning and problem solving,ncalculations and behavior. The three consistent neuropathologicalnhallmarks are amyloid-rich senile plaques, neurofibrillaryntangles and neuronal degeneration. These neuropathologicalnchanges eventually lead to the clinical symptoms,nbut they likely begin to occur years before the onset ofnsymptoms.
