This issue of Current Opinion in Genetics and Development focuses on how an evolutionary genomic perspective can help to unravel fundamental biological processes in plants and accelerate breeding for improved food and biofuel. As with microbial and animal model systems, plant models are used to investigate basic principles and then the information is translated into applications. Rapid developments in 'omics' technologies are now paving the way toward understanding a much broader selection of the plant kingdom, and these new data are being used in novel ways to better understand the biology of plants and spur advances in agriculture and forestry. This work is revealing that the genetic architecture of many biologically and economically important traits vary among distantly related lineages and point to the value of combining data from traditional and emerging model plant species.
