The Ranulph Glanville I knew was concerned with change, especially change within individuals and groups that comes about through a circular process of conversing and reflecting that leads to new understandings that lead to new ways of experiencing that lead to conversing and reflecting; in other words, a process of acting that requires reflective practice (Schon, 1983). One approach to reflective practice (and the practice Ranulph claimed as his own) is designing. I have come to see his work as a process of designing the activity of exploring, or, simply, designing exploring. Ranulph characterizes designers (and design) as follows: Designers work in a way … that allows them to deal with very complex, ill-defined and ambiguous situations that would probably be inaccessible using conventional approaches. The outcomes of design are generally novel but can never be argued to be the best solution ... Design is necessarily a constructivist, second-order cybernetic activity. (Glanville, 2008, p. 75) Designing is a constructivist activity in that those involved in designing are aware that they are making, not finding, what they do. Designing is a second-order cybernetics activity in that it is an intentionally circular process operating on itself. In the case of designing exploring, it is also a process whose product cannot be fully or, at times, even adequately known, as we will see in the following paragraphs.
