摘要

The discussion about a possible distinction between sociology and mathematics and about possible recursions of this distinction and various re-entries on the one or the other side of it reminds one of a persistent sociological problem. Up from its emergence in 19th century, sociology simultaneously overestimates and underestimates its possibilities. The typical sociological habitus combines self-validation with self-suspicion, hubris with contempt. Therefore, sociologists as often coquet with laws, principles, or rules as they tend to take laws, principles, and rules for variables, functions, or problems. Sociology is a discipline in a permanent crisis, and this being-in-crisis itself is its distinguishing mark: a vocation, as Max Weber noticed, to cope with "mad hazard" (Weber, 1946, p. 134). One of these hazardous circumstances, probably the most important, is mathematics, or to say it more precisely: the distinction between sociology and mathematics that is a sociological, but not a mathematical distinction. We will use this paper to undertake an attempt to discuss this assumption. May it thus be that Talcott Parsons' (in)famous verdict on Herbert Spencer's First Principles ("Spencer is dead"; Parsons, 1968, p. 3) today should be supplemented by the warning that sociology would also die if it will not learn to observe mathematically. May it be then a "death by suicide" (Parsons, p. 3). But before succumbing to grief we could remember that crises are at the same time survived suicides and bets on survivability. A discipline in a permanent crisis already left its end behind and thus accounts for further ends. We will take four fast looks at the beginnings of sociology.
