摘要

This article analyzes the social systems theoretical conception of structures as communicational expectations. It starts with a short description of the concept of social systems as communication systems, meaning as medium and the differentiation of expectations, namely normative and cognitive expectations. This concept, although of high relevance for social theory, has been relatively neglected and fell short in the process of developing social systems theory. This article seeks to specify the concept of structures as expectations by applying the calculus of indication, as given by George Spencer-Brown and further developed by Christina Weiss and Dirk Baecker et al. Thereby, one can see expectations as special forms of self-referential re-entry forms, and different types of expectations can be modelled by different types of forms. The calculus can be used as method as well as contribution to a theory of social structures. An in-formation theory of expectations, finally, can help to understand, describe and analyze the underlying dynamics of social change and indicates important necessities for a further development of a general theory of social systems.
