摘要

A recurrent question amongst those interested in cybernetics concerns its name. Many believe the word cybernetics has lost its currency, and in some respects they are obviously right. From early days, there were those who grabbed hold of cybernetics as a way of adding stature and credibility to work that was less than credible: for instance, Maxwell Meltz's psycho-cybernetics. Thanks to William Gibson's invention of the term cyberspace in his novel Neuromancer, the prefix cyber- has come to denote anything vaguely futuristic, computeresque, informational, electronic and (too often) from the dark side.
