The schema concept provides a foundation for extensive research in cognitive science, yet this paradigm has a blind spot as to what a schema is. Though widely recognised as a hierarchical causal structure, the implications of this have been overlooked. While not all schema content is a schema structure at a more abstract level, all schema structure is itself a content viewed from a higher level. There is nothing that can be a schema structure, which is not interchangeable into a schema content. Hence, there cannot be a separate domain, for cognitive science, of deterministic schema structures without also having deterministic schema content. Saussure's structuralist insight that meaning is not positively defined in a single term, but negatively, in its relative difference from other terms, is given expression, on an independent basis in schema structure-content relativity. Interchangeability between schema content and structure, depending on the level of abstraction, leaves the spatial structures of cognitive science's schemata without an anchor outside the structure-content network. This lack of anchor brings rejection to cognitive science's assumed requirement of a positively defined schema structure in an absolute Newtonian-type space. There can be no absolute position in an inner space for a schema structure rather than content. An alternative paradigm is explored focusing on spatial rather than mechanistic causal schemata. Evidence for the existence and relevance of dynamic background spatial schemata of diametric and concentric relation (Levi-Strauss, 1963; Downes, 2003) is explored with regard to von Uexkiill's biosemiotic tradition, as part of a synthesis with Lakoff and Johnson's image schemata, proposed by Brier (2000). Diametric and concentric spatial schemata serve as a bridge between biosemiotics and image schemata, and expand Johnson's challenge to a Kantian domain of pure reason through a framework of schema structure-content relativity. They offer a focus on postdualism rather than the nondualism of Johnson (2007) and Varela, Thompson & Rosch (1991), to elucidate conceptions of structural coupling between organism and environment.
