The phenomenon of knowledge is traditionally justified in terms of subject philosophy: knowledge is the result of a subject's observation. Man observes the world, and the sum of systematised observations is knowledge. My proposal is that the concept of knowledge, instead of accepting the subject-object distinction as an ontological fact, must have as its point of departure that knowledge is the result of distinctions that are repeated. According to this conception, to recognise something means that something is marked according to a distinction. Thereby form is created. If new markings occur on the basis of already performed markings, recognitions become knowledge. In other words, knowledge is a system of recognitions. The advantage of this approach is that instead of operating with a transcendental subject or the subject-object relationship as the blind spot of the science of knowledge, one is able to observe this blind spot as a metaphysical construction. One knows that one does not know what one does not know. A second advantage of this approach is that it is possible to advance a system of categories of knowledge. One can create a distinction-logical system of forms of knowledge, in other words a systematics of knowledge, which is not dependent on characteristics of a subject or the world but represents a systematics of knowledge sui generis.
