摘要

The theme of the 2019 annual conference of the American Society for Cybernetics, held in Vancouver, British Columbia, was "Acting Cybernetically," without a question mark. The intent of adding the question mark is to initiate an exploration of the implications of turning cybernetics into an adverb (or adjective) and then applying it to the activity and behavior of the cybernetician. Of particular concern is whether the adverb cybernetically invokes a mandate: "Act cybernetically!!" If so, it may, unwittingly, imply a moral, perhaps even an ideological, imperative, which this paper argues would not be consistent with the concepts and principles of second-order cybernetics. Having said that, I often observe those with a deep interest in the ideas of cybernetics as acting or behaving differently—that is, "they march to a different tune." The paper addresses two questions: (1) What ideas in cybernetics might have distinguishing impacts on the behaviors of those exposed to them, and why? and, (2) Under what circumstances might the adverb cybernetically be used as a descriptor of human action or behavior without carrying moral or ideological overtones?
