Antibody expression and immunomodulation are modern molecular biotechnologies for producing Pharmaceuticals and affecting cell metabolism or pathogenic infection in plants. Nevertheless, so far no generally accepted strategy has been developed for expressing correctly constructed recombinant antibodies in various cell compartments. To promote expression of immunoglobulins in tobacco, we used single-chain variable fragments (scFvs) of mouse antibodies J2 and P6, which bind with double-stranded RNA. In addition to cytoplasmic expression, we anchored scFvs in the cytoplasmic membrane, directed them into the apoplast, or made them resident in the endoplasmic reticulum. The levels of expression and resistance of transgenic plants to potato virus Y were analyzed and strategies were developed for expressing active recombinant antibodies in various compartments.
