The potential mutagenic activity of 17 color-changing balsams that are used as cosmetic agents for temporary hair dyeing is studied by means of the Ames semiquantitative technique with metabolic activation of the post-mitochondrial fraction of rat liver homogenate preprocessed by means of sodium phenobarbital (to induce monooxygenase of mixed function). The balsams included aqueous solutions of dyes and pigments that are mixed on the hair surface when used. Such hair dyes may be removed by a single effective washing of the hair with a shampoo. The presence of potential mutagenic activity in almost all of the color-changing balsams is demonstrated. Three agents - red tree, chestnut, and ebony - are shown to be the most active inducers of genetic mutations, all of these balsams demonstrating an effect of "average" strength in terms of our classification. One of the color-changing balsams, burgundy, is shown to be genetically neutral. Other preparations demonstrate a mutagenic effect of "weak" strength with five-to two-fold exceedance of the control values.
