In a previous paper, we demonstrated that the average number of aberrations per aberrant cell provides information about features of chromosomal instability induced by mutagenic factors of various nature. In this study we compared characteristics of distribution of chromosomal aberrations in cells under exposure to mutagenic factors of various nature and made theoretical approximation of this distribution. We analyzed distribution of aberrations in cells of root meristem in plants from the genus Allium (Allium cepa L. and Allium fistulosum L.). These aberrations were observed after exposure to γ-radiation, formaldehyde, thiophosphamide, and in the course of aging of seeds. Empirical distribution of aberrations in cells was approximated to Poisson, geometrical, and negative binomial distributions. Allium cepa L. seeds were exposed to γ-radiation and it was found that distribution of aberrations in cells did not correspond to any theoretical distribution. Empirical distribution of aberrations in A. cepa and A. fistulosum cells under various experimental conditions occasionally corresponds to one or several types of theoretical distribution, however distinct correspondence was not observed when seeds were either exposed to chemical mutagens such as thiophosphamide and formaldehyde, or aberrations accumulated with age. The rate of development of chromosomal aberrations with age was higher in A. fistulosum than in A. sepa.
