Influence of low doses of alkylating agents (0.05-0.1 mM) on survival of gametes, fertility, level of both embryonal and postembryonal lethality, and frequency of recessive sex-linked lethal mutations, induced by high doses of mutagens in Drosophila melanogaster were investigated. Pre-treatment of mature males by low doses of methyl and ethyl methanesulfonate (MMS and EMS) had either no effect or even increased cytotoxic and mutagenic effects of the latter both in mature gametes and at premeiotic stages of spermatogenesis. In contrast to that, pre-treatment of larvae with low doses of EMS protected them from the influence of the action of higher doses. This significantly increased male fertility, which decreased both embryonal and postembryonal lethality in F_1 and caused more than a two-fold decrease in the frequency of mutations in F_2. The degree of manifestation of the adaptive response was associated with the stage of development of Drosophila flies which underwent shock treatment. The protection effect was maximal in larvae and was not observed after treatment of mature males. An adaptive response was observed only in Drosophila larvae under the conditions of our experiment.
