H.P. Hood's magnificent new plant in Winchester, Va., is everything people anticipated and maybe a little more. Nearly 400 people, including the governor of Virginia, attended the plant's grand opening in mid-October. The plant includes two PET/HDPE plastic bottle lines with dedicated PET blow-molding machines and three gabletop paper carton lines, all designed to make extended shelflife (ESL) products with a 60-day shelflife. The processing operation features three ultra-high-temperature (UHT) steam injection systems and the plant also includes an automated cold storage warehouse that maintains first in/first out (FIFO) pallet handling.
