Considering the host of forces that aligned against us last year-including a strong dollar, weakened foreign economies and trade-distorting subsidies wielded by other dairy-producing nations -you might think that U.S. dairy exports didn't stand a chance in 1998. As it turned out, they succeeded despite the odds. In fact, last year's exports exceeded 1997 levels in several categories. For the U.S Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and its members, selling abroad has never been a scattershot process. Instead, we work with our member companies-an alliance of producers, processors, exporters and suppliers-to target and develop the specific overseas markets that show the most promise.
