On 25 July,European Court of Justice (ECJ) Advocate General(AG) Melchior Wathelet issueda formal opinion to his fellow judges,advising that copyright,which can currently be claimed for the shape of certainfoods,should not be extended to coverthe taste of food.Such AG opinions areusually adopted as formal rulings by thefull ECJ,of which Wathelet is a member,so the opinion is expected to become anEU-wide legal precedent.
