Castle Dairies is a family run business, and its founder John Emyr Lloyd churned cream for over 40 years - his first job was on a dairy farm where he worked his way up from churn cleaner to wagon driver. After years of mastering every aspect of the process, he eventually bought Castle Dairies in 1986. Meanwhile, having learnt the trade in New Zealand and Australia, John's son Nigel brought all his experience to the family business and took over the running of the operations in 2000 as John retired. The company has had a few bumps along the way. In 2005 a devastating fire in the spray drying tower created a change of direction. Cheese making ceased and butter became Castle Dairies' main focus. Investment was made in the factory with support from the Welsh assembly government and EU grant aid and, as a phoenix from the ashes, a new butter churning facility with re-organised packing lines was introduced with modern process technology.
