The European Union passed a directive in 2019 on single-use plastics (SUP) that aims to reduce the volume and impact of certain plastic products on the environment as well as promote the transition to a circular economy within the EU. The SUP directive sets clear targets to implement mandatory tethered caps for all beverage containers up to three litres by 2024 as well as at least 25 per cent rPET content in plastic containers and a collection rate of 77 per cent for all single-use plastic beverage containers by 2025. The circular economy concept is not only an EU initiative, but also part of worldwide momentum in this direction. Thus, keeping the bottle and cap together for the lifespan of the package is more important than ever. Sidel for its part carried out a survey to get a better understanding of consumers' environmental perceptions, their requirements for clo- sures in general and their opinions about these new tethered caps. Results show that although participants agree that tethered caps contribute to a greener perception of plastic bottles, a cap should mainly guarantee product safety and user-friendliness.
