The move to phase out R22 gas by January 2015 is coming up in the European Union, and for links in the chill chain, time is of the essence. R22 is a transitional hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) that will no longer be able to be used in the EU. This is all part of the EC Ozone Regulation, which was reworked in 2009, in order for EU Member States to meet obligations under the Montreal Protocol, the international agreement drawn up to halt damage to the ozone layer. The most harmful ozone-depleting substances (such as CFC R12) were banned in the 1990s. New equipment using less harmful, 'transitional' HCFC refrigerants such as R22 was banned in 2001 (or 2004 for small air-conditioning systems). The use of virgin HCFCs for servicing existing equipment and air conditioning equipment was banned in 2009.
