Dairy UK's Growth Agenda Seminar, held in London recently, was as much of a wake-up call for British producers, as it was a call to get production going for the Irish dairy industry. As Billy Keane, chairman of Dairy UK, asks, "The Irish want to exploit the end of quotas with the utmost target of 50 per cent growth. How realistic is that ambition?" The answer is probably more realistic than British producers on the other side of the Irish Sea would like to admit. Currently, around 40 per cent of Ireland's exports head to the UK. That being said, Gerry O'Reilly of ofitradein.com, notes that there is room for British producers to join in the export success of Ireland. He says there are lessons for the entire dairy industry to learn in using the evolving internet. His website helps Irish food companies find export opportunities.
