The development of Bangladesh's dairy processing industry has been plagued by a shortage of local milk production, and as a result has seen growth in fits and starts, rather than in a smooth upward line. Imported powder milk presently accounts for about 75 per cent of Bangladesh's total milk supply, and recent price increases in this material have caused tremors in the market as a result. The high cost of imports continues to slow development of modern dairy processing in this potentially large emerging market.
