The first day of the annual PPMA show a: the Birmingham NEC was somewhat subdued but exhibitors reported good footfall and said attendees were interested in buying. And what a choice of products from which to choose... Packaging Automation was showing two innovations at its stand, one of which was for food packaging. The eco-cut machine cuts film wastage by around one-third by using the exact width of film. "Retailers supported us to get the machine into the market," says Neil Ashton, Packaging Automation's sales manager. Meanwhile, PA's Fastfill volumetric container filling and sealing machines have been modified with new developments, such as an improved gas flushing system (or modified atmosphere packaging), in order to package products such as soft cheese where oxygen taint is not desirable. The advance comes as a result of trials to extend the shelf life of an innovative new drink product, where PA was able to achieve residual oxygen levels below one per cent.
