Barack Obama's victory in the US election puts an end to uncertainty for American trade and agricultural policy. The vote giving the Democrats overwhelming control gives them power to carry forward their policies. At the same time the credit crunch and the recession hitting the world economies is bound to have a lasting impact on the global international trade talks. Talks to finalise the Doha round have been on hold while the US presidential elections were pending but now they are over, the negotiators should start in earnest to conclude these talks urgently.
