Dairying - Can it manage change?" was an 1 appropriate title for this year's International Dairy Federation (IDF) World Dairy Summit in Dublin - especially since 2007 has, as most speakers noted, seen more dramatic fluctuations in prices than ever before. At the end of the dairy leaders conference on the initial day of the summit, the speakers (from Fonterra, Campina, Dairy Farmers of America and the Irish Agriculural Board) were asked to predict when the high prices would end, and all of them were hesitant. "None of us could have predicted how it has turned out so it's hard to tell," said Justin Sanders, CEO of Campina. "And being in a strong dairy industry, none of us would say if it was about to turn." Global perspective The summit saw more than 900 delegates descend on Dublin from more than 50 countries around the world and the event provided a global perspective on the dairy industry and the marketplace in general. The president of Ireland, Mary McAleese, officially opened the proceedings, and she praised the innovation and technological developments that have taken place in the dairy sector at an international level. "The sector's ability to manage change, and indeed to drive it, has," she said, "been at the root of its success, as shown by the pervasion of technology and innovation throughout the sector, from farms, through transportation and industrial plants."
