ZHANG Liwen is one of the leading scholars in Chinese philosophical studies. A Philosophynof Harmony is his own systematic philosophy, a creation toward a new path forncontemporary development in Chinese philosophical studies. Just as the subtitle of thisnbook indicates, his philosophy of harmony is a strategic framework for Chinese culture innthe 21st century. He has promoted his philosophy of harmony for nearly 20 years, since thenfirst time he brought forward his own theory.nIn the Analects, Confucius has a famous saying: “seeking harmony not sameness” (he ernbutong 和而不同). This phrase is usually quoted as a description of the spirit of Chinesenculture, which, in its long history, has synthesized many different cultural resources fromnoutside, such as Indian Buddhism in the past and Western culture in recent centuries. Nonreal clash occurred during this process, and so it was more like a harmonious journey.nThrough his solid research on the history of Chinese philosophy, Zhang is greatlyninfluenced by his culture. Before creating his own philosophical system, Zhang publishednmany books on Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism, The Book of Changes, Chinese philosoph-nical categories, and the historical development of Chinese philosophy. Zhang puts forwardnhis philosophy of harmony based on his understanding of the Chinese philosophical spiritnand his life-long devotion to the history of Chinese culture.
