Two different network RFPs were presented to the manufacturers. The first tested Bay Networks' and Cabletron Systems' ability to develop a switched network infrastructure. This large utility company has a main campus network interconnecting eight buildings. Of possibly more interest are the 130 remote buildings connected by T1 and T3 links. With 130 remote locations, it was clear that Bay and Cabletron were faced with a formidable challenge to build a network, both LAN and WAN. Key to solving this RFP was to provide a backbone that would accommodate vLANs in the future. Thirty of these remote locations were larger regional offices that were connected with T3 links.
