Earthbound communications with satellites and space probes face many of the same challenges as disk-drive channels: how to most efficiently draw the correct sequence from a noisy data stream. NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, CA, has been a key sponsor of these advanced signal-processing techniques, many of which have also been adapted to disk-drive applications. In what may be the most revolutionary design change in years, channel researchers are looking into NASA "turbocode" techniques to boost channel performance by up to 5 dB. This would correspond to a greater than 30% increase in data-storage capacity.
