With a population of about 18 million people spread primarily around the perimeter of a vast continent approximately the size of the continental United States, Australia has about a dozen important capital city newspapers, most of them (the exception is Darwin in the Northern Territory) available electronically from three Australian database host services—AUSINET, PressCom, QUNIS—and one international host—Reuters Business Briefing (RBB). See the accompanying chart for details. Aside from RBB, the Australian press is largely missing from internationally available databases. (Although LAC PROMT contains selected business-oriented articles from Australian Financial Review and The Australian). The Australian press has disappeared from Textline in 1997. A few Australian newspapers have Web pages but most lack either archives or searchability or both. Searchers outside Australia, therefore, face serious obstacles in accessing the Australian press.
