"The day begins at midnight." This motto might be inscribed in the top of an archway leading to the Internet Public Library's reference department, if it were located in a building made of brick and mortar. But because IPL exists only in cyberspace, the slogan is posted near the bottom of the reference department's Web page. The phrase refers to the hour at which the staff begins to go through the library's email box to answer queries received from different time zones around the world. Coined when the library was still in the planning stage, the slogan also is indicative of the staffs round-the-clock enthusiasm for exploring the most effective ways to provide online library services. Faced with the many time-consuming challenges of developing those services for the Internet, one of the library's founders said, "Well, the day begins at midnight." "It was the perfect phrase said at the perfect moment," the library's director, Joseph Janes, recently noted, "and it became the motto."
