Global economies spur individuals and companies to pay attention to changes in currency exchange rates. These changes can affect the corporate bottom line, not to mention what individual consumers pay for imported items. When the yen is strong and the dollar is weak, for example, Japanese-made cars cost more in the United States because the yen price translates to more dollars. Similarly, a British company with operations in Argentina looks closely at the rate of the pound sterling to the Argentinian peso. If it changes markedly from its current 1.56 trading point, the money paid to the Argentinians for salaries, benefits, and materials will either go up or down.
