A Course Design That Features a Constructivist Approach to Teaching Introduction to Information Technology

The Internet and Web-based technologies have created a number of new options for teaching information technology (IT) courses. Possibilities range from using information technology (both sychronously and asychronously) in a traditional classroom setting to a distance education model, where there are no formal meetings in an actual classroom. Key themes in information systems (IS) educational research now include IT-enabled instructional methods in traditional settings, IT-enabled collaborative learning, virtual learning environments, and student characteristics that affect the outcomes of IT-enabled learning (Alavi & Leidner, 2001). This paper describes an introduction to information technology graduate-level course, which uses a constructivist technology-mediated learning (TML) approach that combines a traditional classroom setting with the use of IT. An important goal of this effort was to better identify learning that accompanies a course characterized by an instructor who directs the knowledge-gathering process as opposed to being the primary disseminator of knowledge.
