摘要

The year 2007 proved to be a virtual Pandora's Box of political and social unrest for Pakistan. What started as a post 9/11 anti-terrorism operation against foreign militants, and at most some hostile insurgent elements, restricted initially to the mountains of South Waziristan, manifested in another form in Balochistan. Later, in the wake of the judicial crisis, the gruesome May twelfth Karachi carnage was followed close on its heels by the Jamia Mosque (Lal Masjid) standoff for several months, culminating finally in the deafening Operation Silence. This gave credence to a wave of terrorist activities and suicide bombing strikes mainly against military targets virtually throughout the country, and finally the year's ugliness manifested itself in full force through the heinous killing of Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto.
