摘要

Domestic, regional and international events of the last five years have further eroded the legitimacy of the state and its ability to assert itself in many countries. In the case of Pakistan, a complex array of political, economic, security and ideological factors have contributed to this phenomenon. Legitimacy of the rulers has, at the best of times, been very shaky and now it is being questioned on legal, political and religious grounds which is preventing development of consensus on even basic issues. Non-state actors of different varieties have seen a dramatic rise in their fortunes and they are now attempting to occupy the vacuum created by the weakness of the government. The single most important factor which has significantly eroded the national foundations is the rise of Islamist political phenomenon coupled with marked polarization of the society. Existing fault lines- have sharpened and new ones are being created at an alarming pace.
