When Saghir Tahir, the little known Pakistani American civil engi-neer was elected to the New Hampshire State Assembly in 2000, to become first American of Pakistan descent to enter a US legislature, a joke would be frequently heard in Pakistani gatherings. The one-sentence joke would say "Saggy (Saghir Tahir is known to his friends and electorate as Saggy) won the election because there was no Pakistani in his constituency," (The soft-spoken Saghir won the elections from a constituency in which only one Pakistani family lived).
