Many in Pakistan refused to believe in a sweeping statement made in a report prepared by a Washington-based think tank, Center for Strategic and International Studies in September this year. Authors Rick Burton and Craig Cohen of the report "Pakistan: A perilous course" had declared, "The United States has less influence in Pakistan than either Americans think or Pakistanis fear." On its face-value, the statement looks like an overesti-mation of the ruling Pakistani general's ability to defy the powerful international players. However, the CSIS prophecy turned out to be a reality or maybe a real deception on November 3, when the world's lone superpower watched "almost helplessly" its closest ally and Pakistan's military President General Pervez Musharraf impose emergency, suspend the Constitution, send the country's top judiciary packing, gag the press, and suppress the dissenting and protesting voices of the Pakistani civil society with an iron fist.
