As the deadline of August 31 passed and Iran's position remained unchanged on the issue of uranium enrichment, the door for imposition of sanctions was opened. A defiant Ahmadinejad lashed out at the USA calling it "tyrannical" and insisting Tehran would not be "bullied" into giving up the right to use nuclear technology. In open reference to the possibility of sanction, other Iranian officials said the country could withstand any punishment. President Bush, in a speech in Salt Lake city said Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon insisting that Washington had hoped for a diplomatic solution, but insisted "it is time for Iran to make a choice" whether to cooperate with the UN.
